“We’ve had breakdowns, been stopped by four police cars for bribes, been sick a couple of times, got lost in a desert, got stuck in sand, and someone actually robbed all our camping equipment,” Cristian Spiteri smiled. “But all of this made the experience even better and more thrilling.”

Along with his two friends Daniel and Keith, Cris made up Malta’s first ever rally team to take part in the gruelling MongolRally. One of the most challenging races around, the rally saw Team Balzarsky go on an insane 11,000 mile adventure that started in the UK and, 21 countries later, ended all the way in Russia. And they did it all in a renovated, rundown Peugeot 205 they affectionately called Lizzie.

Speaking to Lovin Malta a couple of hours after finally crossing the finish line, the Maltese trio spoke of the challenging adventure that took a whole 45 days to complete.

“It definitely wasn’t easy, but it was all worth it,” Cristian told Lovin Malta. “This wasn’t a holiday, but a challenging experience. I would suggest it to anyone who loves adventure though.”

The Maltese trio have been updating family, friends and fans on their Instagram account for months now, taking over people’s feeds with everything from Lizzie’s transformation to some breathtaking views from Europe and Asia.

The challenge was also part of a fundraising initiative that the Maltese trio had launched before leaving the island

“We collected a total of £1,050 for CoolEarth and another €1,300 for Puttinu Cares,” Cristian told Lovin Malta.

“It was an awesome experience,” the young Maltese man said of the tough experience that the team described as “11,000 miles of pure adventure, challenges, and fun.”
