Luxol St Andrews Futsal Club players are getting ready for their test of their lives, a competitive game at home against reigning European champions Barcelona.

After improving their ranking in recent months, the Maltese futsal champions were placed in the main round draw of the UEFA Futsal Champions League.

They were drawn against three tough opponents – Slovenian champions Dobovec, Dutch champions Hovocubo and FC Barcelona Futsal, who won the 2021-22 Champions League after beating Sporting CP 4-0.

All teams will play once against each other, with the games taking place between 26th and 29th October at the University Sports Complex in Msida.

While preliminary Champions League group games have been held in Malta before, this is the first time games from the main stage of the tournament will be held on Maltese soil.

Luxol will play against Dobovec on 26th October, Hovcubo a day later and Barcelona on the 29th.

The top three teams in the group will qualify to the elite round of 16, a feat no Maltese futsal team has ever achieved.

The Maltese team may be the underdog but the fact all their games at home could give them a boost, and the club is urging as many people as possible to show their support.

Luxol’s efforts have not gone unnoticed by the government, with the Sports Ministry’s permanent secretary Matthew Vella describing the Maltese club’s efforts as a “huge inspiration to other clubs in various disciplines to set the ball rolling and step up to be successful”.

Tourism Minister Clayton Bartolo added that this tournament is an example of sports tourism, which is pivotal to the government’s strategy of generating incremental tourism throughout the year”.

Will you go to the ground to show Luxol your support?
