Malta Places Third In Under-20 EU Championships Claiming First-Ever Win In Junior Competition
Junior weightlifter, Kim Camilleri Lagana secured Malta’s first-ever medals in the Under-20 European Weightlifting Championships.
At the competition, held in Warsaw, Poland, Camilleri Lagana made an impressive start with the Snatch event, finishing fourth with her 65kg lift, right after the Moldovan athlete, who placed third due to finishing the lift first. The first place spot was claimed by Greece’s young lifter, followed by Great Britain in second.
However, Camilleri Lagana made an astounding comeback in the Clean & Jerk event where she confidently lifted 83kg that secured her second place in the category, earning Malta its first-ever medal, surpassing many seasoned athletes from across the continent.
The firsts didn’t end there, however, as when it came down to the overall standings, her performance and ambition earned her a bronze medal, marking a historic achievement for Malta in the junior European stage.
More potential success awaits as the championships continue this week with Youth World Champion Gold-Medalist Tenishia Thornton scheduled to compete tomorrow and up-and-comer Rylee Borg on Wednesday.
Big congratulations to the young athlete and best of luck to the lifters completing in the upcoming events!
