Malta’s tennis duo Francesca Curmi and Elaine Genovese produced a stunning comeback against Italy to qualify to the women’s doubles final of the 2022 Mediterranean Games.

Curmi and Genovese were up against it in Algeria yesterday evening, facing Italy’s top seeded Nuria Brancaccio and Aurora Zantedeschi in the semi-final.

Italy seized the advantage, winning the first set 6-3, but Curmi and Genovese came from behind to win the second and third sets by 7-6 and 11-9, sending Malta to their first ever Mediterranean Games tennis final, where they will face Spain.

The result means Malta has secured its first medal at the Games, with the only question now being whether it will be silver or gold.

Reacting to the result, the Malta Tennis Federation praised Curmi and Genovese for their “fighting spirit” and “never-say-die attitude” and said Malta is proud of their achievement.

Well done Francesca and Elaine!
