A day after Prime Minister Joseph Muscat called for Maltese athletes to start winning more, a group of female athletes won Malta’s first Commonwealth Games 2018 medal.

The Women’s Fours lawn bowls team beat out team Canada 17 – 8 in an energetic match to win the bronze medal.

The team, made up of Rebecca Rixon, her daughters Rosemaree Rixon, and Connie-Leigh Rixon, and Sharon Callus, gave an impressive performance after starting off at a disadvantage only to turn the score around and come out on top.

Their win placed them in the third place overall in the female lawn bowls rankings, clinching them the bronze medal.

The female team were praised online for their hard-fought and historic win. Their win comes after other impressive wins by Team Malta in squash.

The male lawn bowls team also fought a hard battle against the Cook Islands, but were unable to overcome their opponents to lose 17 – 11.

The men’s pair of Shaun Parnis and Brendan Aquilina were able to catch up to and hold their Cook Islands counterparts after losing the advantage early on, holding them al 10 – 10, only to be defeated following a final flurry of scores from the Cook Islands team.

Team Malta has won four medals previously in the Commonwealth Games; a bronze in Auckland 1990, a bronze in Manchester 2002, and a bronze and silver in Melbourne 2006.
