Malta’s Elite Athletes Hit Parade Of Nations At 2022 Mediterranean Games
Malta’s finest athletes have hit the parade of nations at the 2022 Mediterranean Games, with tennis star Francesca Curmi and shooting sensation Marlon Attard leading them out as flagbearers.
The two have been nothing short of stellar in their most recent challenges, which included stand-out performances at high-profile competitions abroad.
19-Year-old tennis starlet Francesca Curmi won two ITF titles in as many ranked tournaments in Tunisia. She even etched her name in history, becoming the first Maltese female tennis player to win a pro tournament.
Attard has also made waves abroad, narrowly missing out on a bronze medal at the ISSF World cup held in Azerbaijan.
Malta will be represented at the Games, held in Oran, Algeria, by 23 athletes across five different disciplines – athletics, cycling, sailing, shooting, and tennis.
At a Malta Olympic Committee press conference, Chef de Mission Johanna Grech said the athletes were chosen from a pool of 107 eligible contenders, and that their selection was made to increase Malta’s chances of a sizeable medal haul.
“The sports that have been chosen, have all been picked in order to achieve the best results. We believe in our athletes and that we can attain the best level.”
Together, they will face 3,390 athletes from 26 countries in the Games’ 19th edition, which opened on 25th June and will close on 6th July.
