Malta’s First Female Professional Boxer KOs Her Way To Global Top 40
34-year-old Maltese boxer Claire Ciantar has just been ranked among the top 40 in the world, placing at an awesome 33.
Ciantar, who also happens to be Malta’s first female professional boxer, won six rounds against the experienced Hungarian Zsofia Bedo, who previously had 19 wins under her belt.
This was the first professional female fight sanctioned by the Malta Boxing Association, but definitely not Ciantar’s first win. Earlier this year, she defeated the UK boxer Emily Pugh during a fight night at the Aria Complex.
Ciantar trains under legendary international veteran coach Quendar Pena from the Dominican Republic. Her first coach when she started boxing nearly a decade ago was Haithem Laamouz, who’s currently busy being crowned undefeated champion in Australia.
“Throughout my journey and training, apart from personal success, I want to act as a good role model and mentor to aspiring Maltese female athletes,” Claire said. She has a twelve-year-old, Phoebe, who she’s frequently described as being one of her biggest inspirations.
Claire and her coach have now moved to the newly-opened and exclusive Caribbean Boxing Club in Qormi, where they hope to soon climb even higher in the worldwide ranks! Ciantar’s next fight will be against the Italian Angela Cannizzaro on the 20th of May.
