Maltese footballer Luke Gambin will be looking to follow Michael Mifsud’s footsteps after Colchester United were drawn against giants Manchester United in the Carabao Cup quarter-final.
Gambin netted the third goal in a 3-1 victory over Crawley Town, helping guide the league two minnows to an enticing draw at the iconic Old Trafford Stadium.
Colchester United, the lowest-ranked side remaining in the competition, can find some hope in their visit to the intimidating stadium having knocked out Tottenham Hotspur earlier in the competition.
With ‘Visit Malta’ now adorned around the iconic stadium, Gambin will at least get the chance to feel at home!
While admittedly unheard of on the global stage, Maltese football has some incredible memories of the stadium. In the same competition back in 2007, Michael Mifsud netted two goals in Coventry City’s shock 3-1 win at Old Trafford.
“You come into football for days like this,” Colchester United’s chairman said when hearing the news.
We’re sure Gambin feels the same.
