Malta’s National Football Team Meets Pope Leo

A historic and unforgettable moment unfolded today as the Malta Men’s National Football Team had the incredible honour of meeting His Holiness Pope Leo XIV at the Vatican.

“The Malta Men’s National Football Team and the delegation led by MFA President Bjorn Vassallo and National Team Coach Emilio De Leo, had the honour of attending a Papal Audience and Blessing with His Holiness Pope Leo XIV,” said the Malta Football Association.

Accompanied by H.E. Frank Zammit, Ambassador of Malta to the Holy See, the team presented the Pope with a 125th Anniversary Commemorative National Team Shirt, marking a milestone in Maltese football history.

The gesture celebrated more than a century of footballing pride and was a symbolic moment connecting the sport, the nation, and a historic visit to the Vatican.

For the players and delegation, it was a day to remember, a rare mix of sport, culture, and spiritual blessing all in one unforgettable visit.
