Malta’s women’s national football team is facing Azerbaijan in a crunch World Cup qualifier that could be crucial in their campaign to make it to the prestigious competition.

Malta currently sits fourth in qualifying group E currently six points off of second place Bosnia and Herzegovina and five points off of third-placed Montenegro but they have a game in hand. Denmark, in the first place, has already qualified.

Losing or drawing tonight will effectively end their chances of qualifying for the World Cup.

However, Malta may still have a chance with the best performing third-placed teams in qualifying will make it to the competition.

Malta beat Azerbaijan 2-1 in the away fixture last October and will be hoping they can replicate or better that performance this evening. They will then face Montenegro on Tuesday in a match that could define either team’s campaign.

The game kicks off tonight at 7.30pm. TVM will be airing the match live.
