Maltese CrossFit Athletes Steamroll Their Way To Second Place In Italian Championship

Medalling is quite a big deal in the torturous world of competitive CrossFit. But two Maltese athletes just went and bagged silver in one massive event held in Bari, Italy.

The competition – Southern Warriors – welcomed over 800 athletes spread across their own respective categories.

Malta’s Malcolm Scicluna and Christina Grima not only qualified for the Masters Male/Female division, they absolutely smashed it.

As for what it entailed? Six tough events spread over the course of three days (two events each day). Events, they were called. But they were no simple feats mere mortals are equipped to deal with.

The pair walked home with silverware even after injuries gummed up the works on the first day. Malcolm and Christina started off with a last-placed and fourth-placed finish in the ‘Swim and Run’ and ‘Gymnastics’ events.

They made a fiery comeback on the second day, winning a third event that involved handstand push-ups for reps, rope-climbing, and a 30m handstand walk.

And as the fourth event came, Malcolm and Christina placed second in a set that saw them hit complex clean-and-jerks with some heavy weights.

All this sounds pretty tough already, but it was nothing compared to the last day.

After the pair placed second, again, in a strongman-based workout, the two absolutely nailed the final ‘demolisher’. What did that consist of? A grueling 50 synchronised pull-ups, rowing, weightlifting, ski-ergs, and Devil’s presses (a combination of a dumbbell burpee, and a double dumbbell snatch). They placed first in this event.

Malcolm and Christina’s results sent them soaring to second place, narrowly behind the winners of the respective set but no doubt a respectable result altogether.

The tournament was a global ranking event that saw the Maltese duo sweat on the sands alongside nine other teams that qualified for the event.

They were also joined by two other Maltese athletes – Rachelle Cutajar and Jessica Camilleri – who placed third in their international functional fitness competition category.
