Maltese Weightlifting Team Shines At European Union Cup In Romania
The Maltese National Weightlifting team has made an impressive start at the European Union Cup in Romania, kicking off the competition with a historic win.
On the first day, Nathan Mifsud secured a Bronze Medal in the Male U-15 category—Malta’s first-ever European Cup medal in this division.
Mifsud showcased a stellar performance, completing all six of his lifts with a 79kg Snatch and a 98kg Clean & Jerk.

Weighing just 54kg, he also set nine new national records and improved his overall total by 12kg. In a nail-biting finish, he missed the Silver Medal by a mere 0.6 Sinclair points, narrowly beaten by a Polish competitor.
But Malta’s success didn’t stop there. Kim Camilleri Lagana earned a Silver Medal in the Women’s U-17 category, with strong lifts of 62kg and 65kg in the Snatch and an 87kg Clean & Jerk. With a total of 232 points, Kim came heartbreakingly close to Gold, missing out by just 0.13 points due to a strategic lift from another Polish athlete.
Both athletes’ achievements mark a fantastic opening for Team Malta, with more competition to come as Rylee Borg competes in the U-17 category and Tenishia Thornton in the U-20.
With this momentum, Malta’s weightlifters are poised for more success in the days ahead.
Well done Kim and Nathan!
