A number of football coaches and players have been suspended following a post-match scuffle between Luqa FC and Melita.
Luqa FC player Ryan Gafa was handed a three-match suspension along with Melita player Noel Francis Omondi for their involvement in the incident which saw benches from both teams involved in a physical confrontation following the blow of the final whistle.
A copy of the match report seen by Lovin Malta indicated that Gafa had “started a mass confrontation” and told Omondi to “go back to your country”, before pushing the player “violently” from the neck.
However, footage of the fight indicates that the scuffle broke out prior to this incident, with one player head-butting another just seconds after the game concluded.
Moreover, additional sanctions were handed out to several players and coaches, including Melita’s Ciantar Alessandro and Luqa’s Lufi Edmon who were both suspended for two matches.
Melita’s Savior Debono Grech was also fined.
Following the incident, Luqa FC said it will be taking action against its own players and encouraged Melita to do the same.
The incident will now be brought to the attention of the Malta Football Association’s disciplinary structures.
