Valletta FC is set to offer a two-year contract to Usain Bolt, fulfilling the Jamaican sprint champion’s dream of becoming a professional footballer.

Bolt, 32, is currently undergoing a trial with the Central Coast Mariners in the Australian A-League but his agent revealed last week that his client could move to Europe after receiving an offer from “a major European club”.

Maltese champions Valletta, who were recently taken over by UAE investors Sanban Group, have now confirmed with ESPN that they have offered Bolt a two-year contract.

“A champion is always welcome and at Valletta FC we believe nothing is impossible,” the club’s managing director and CEO Ghasston Slimen said, adding that he hoped Bolt could pave the way for more athletes to switch sports.

He added he hopes he can sign the eight-time Olympic sprint champion in time for Valletta’s Maltese Super Cup match against title rivals Balzan on 13th December.

The move is the first real statement of intent from the Sanban Group, who raised eyebrows last month when it pledged to take Valletta FC to the group stages of the Champions League, in what would be a first for a Maltese club.
