‘The Strongest I’ve Ever Been’: Neil Agius Completes 12-Hour, 37-Kilometre Session Ahead Of Big September Swim
Man or machine? Well, when it comes to Neil Agius, it continues to get harder and harder to tell.
Ahead of his new world-record-breaking attempt swim next month, Agius took to the north of Malta for a training session yesterday… and it casually ended up lasting 12 hours and spanning across 37 kilometres, with the former Maltese Olympian burning over 4,500 calories in the process.
“Coming into the last few weeks of intense training before I start to deload for three weeks to be in perfect condition once the window open,” Agius told Lovin Malta following the intense Majjistral open water swimming session which also saw him cross the popular Għadira Bay before going all the way up to the northern tip of the island.

No stranger to insane challenges that are hard to fathom, Agius plans to return to the ultra-endurance scene next month to re-attempt a world-record 160-kilometre swim, but this time, he’s bringing it all home. Should he complete the swim, he will be the first person to have fully completed a swim around Malta, Gozo and Comino… and considering that whole thing takes just over 100 kilometres, he’ll actually restart the whole swim at one point in his three-day, non-stop challenge.
“I’m really happy with the way my body is reacting to the long sessions,” Agius told Lovin Malta after yesterday’s intense training which kicked off just before 5.30am. “This is the strongest I’ve ever been physically and also mentally.”
