We’ve been following these guys’ journey around our island closely here, and although everyone expected them to complete their challenge in 24 hours, Neil surprised us all by finishing his swim in a whooping 21 hours and 52 minutes!

Two of the swimmers had to pull out of the challenge moments away from the finish line.

One of the two swimme, Richard had to pull out of the challenge due to severe shoulder pain. Even though strong pain killers were provided, he had a terrible locked shoulder which was making it impossible for him to swim without feeling any pain.

Richard amazed us all by swimming 45 kilometres in the last six hours all the while fighting his injury. You’re our hero Richard!

Gilbert also had to stop around 15.30 pm due to the exhaustion and strong currents he had to face. The sea current changed direction around 10.00 am today, making it way more difficult for our guys to push through.

Gilbert Bartolo, Richard Zerafa and Neil Agius set out to swim a staggering 70 kilometre swim around our island to raise awareness for cleaner seas for the Round Malta Swim challenge.

You really made us proud, boys!

As soon as they started their swim yesterday, their energy and vitality could be felt all around.

The trio stopped regularly to eat energising snacks and keep their bodies hydrated, however they rarely took their whole one minute break. These men truly pushed themselves to the limit for this challenge.

They even urged people to pick up plastic waste from the sea as they were making their way back to Mellieħa.
