Two Maltese Athletes Take On Four-Day Endurance Challenge To Raise Awareness For Men’s Mental Health

Mark and Jon from Vitera Running and Triathlon are about to put their endurance to the ultimate test — not just for the challenge, but for a cause that hits close to home for thousands of men in Malta and beyond.

Starting from today 28th March to 31st, the duo will spend six hours each day swimming, cycling and running in a powerful campaign called IRON MINDS, aiming to spotlight the link between physical activity and men’s mental health.

The statistics are sobering. Men are significantly less likely to seek help for mental health struggles, and suicide rates among men are nearly three times higher than among women, both in Malta and globally.

“Mark and Jon took on this challenge because they’ve seen how many men suffer in silence,” said Daniela Calleja Bitar.

“They want to show that strength isn’t just about pushing your body – it’s about being brave enough to speak up, to be vulnerable, and to ask for help when you need it.”

Each day of the challenge will combine physical endurance and emotional intention, aiming to show that fitness can play a powerful role in supporting mental health.

The event is designed to raise awareness, start important conversations, and encourage men to find wellness strategies that work for them – whether that’s through sport, movement, or simply opening up to someone they trust.

“This isn’t about being the fittest or fastest,” said the Vitera team. “It’s about showing up for yourself every day – mentally and physically – and knowing that it’s OK to ask for support.”

The IRON MINDS initiative highlights the growing movement to destigmatise men’s mental health struggles and promote accessible, everyday tools that support wellbeing.

Regular physical activity has been shown to reduce symptoms of anxiety and depression, improve mood and cognitive function, and create opportunities for meaningful social connection.

Several well-known faces are expected to join the event across the four days, helping to amplify the message and show solidarity with the cause.

IRON MINDS is more than just a physical challenge. It is a call to action, a show of solidarity, and a timely reminder that mental strength starts with speaking up — and knowing you’re not alone.
