Undefeated Malta Rugby Sevens Outplay Opponents In European Conference Championship
The Malta national sevens rugby team secured promotion to the next tier of European competition after they walked away with a continental trophy whilst remaining undefeated throughout.
During the competition, Malta faced off against five national teams all vying for promotion from Rugby Europe Conference II to Conference I – the third tier of European rugby.
At the tournament, Malta won over the likes of San Marino (19-5), Slovenia (21-12), Kosovo (48-0), Estonia (50-7), and Slovakia (35-7).
It was a first for Malta, with the country hosting its first Rugby Europe tournament – and of sizeable caliber too – for the first time ever.
And to cap it off emphatically, the home team will now rise up Rugby Europe’s international ladder.
Speaking with Lovin Malta was Rhona Xerri, Secretary-General of Rugby Malta, who hailed the team for their impressive performance, especially with the Games of the Small States laying on the horizon.
“It was amazing to see them play in such a way,” Rhona said. “And it served as a ‘rehearsal’ for the challenges to come, including the Conference League I, which, could hopefully take place in Malta too.”
