A group of Hajduk Split fans took their team’s Europa League elimination to Gżira United pretty badly, storming their home pitch to vent their frustration.
Croatian media outlet 24sata reported that members of the fan group Torcida broke through the safety fence of the Poljud stadium and chased the Split players before they were stopped and escorted away by security guards.
Some fans reportedly even tried to get into the VIP section to confront the Hajduk Split management.
Last night’s result has been described by sections of the Croatian press as one of the biggest embarrassments in Hajduk Split’s history.
The Croatian side had won the away leg in Malta 2-0 and were widely expected to see off Gżira United in front of their own fans. They took the lead in the first half but a gritty Gżira launched a stunning comeback in the next 45 minutes to win 3-1 and qualify to the second round of the UEFA Europa League.
