Joe Cordina, a professional Welsh boxer with Maltese heritage, claimed the IBF super featherweight title last night after knocking out the previous champion, Japan’s Kenichi Ogawa.

At the Motorpoint Arena in his hometown of Cardiff, Cordina showed great dexterity by knocking Ogawa out with a right-hand punch in the first half of the second round.

Cordina has therefore won the belt from Ogawa and will be expected to fight to maintain it next year.

“It’s a lifetime of work gone into five-and-a-half minutes; I’m just so thankful,” Cordina said afterwards. “I’ve been throwing some big punches in this camp; we’ve been working hard in the gym.”

“We’ve been working on that punch all camp and it’s an amazing feeling when you put hours and hours into it and it comes off in the fight and it’s lights out.”

Although Cordina is Welsh, he has spoken in the past about feeling a connection with his Maltese heritage.

“It is a weight on my shoulders but it is a good feeling for me to represent the Maltese people,” he said in a 2019 interview with Times of Malta.
