WATCH: Incredible! 15-Year-Old Maltese Tennis Player Makes History By Qualifying For Roland-Garros Juniors
Francesca Curmi has been on fire recently, gaining win after win in her top-level tennis matches. She’s now officially made history after becoming the first Maltese athlete to qualify for the Main Round of the prestigious Roland-Garros Juniors 2018.
The 15-year-old qualified this morning after winning her second qualifying game against the talented Turkish tennis-player Selin Ovunc in two sets. She easily overcame her opponent with a final score of 6-1 and 6-3. Curmi dominated the game, beating her opponent and showing everyone just how capable and impressive a tennis-player she was developing into.
She also beat the Swiss tennis player Leonie Kung is her previous qualifying match 6-7, 6-3 and 6-2. She was ranked at 459 in the WTA world rankings after that win.
Her coach Mathew Asciak said that Francesca will find out who her next opponents will be in the main round of 64 players tomorrow evening when the ballots are called. Her first game in the Roland Garros Juniors will be on Sunday 3rd June.
In a span of mere months, Francesca has gone from being in the top 80 junior tennis players in the world, to the top 60. She’s risen nearly 2,000 places in ranking in the two years since her debut.
