It seems unbelievable now that Malta used to beat the likes of Belgium and Iceland, draw with Portugal and lose by narrow 3-2 margins to Spain and West Germany.
However, those were results obtained by the Maltese football team in the 80s and 90s, back when Carmel Busuttil (Il-Bużu), widely regarded as Malta’s best ever player, used to grace the pitch.
Il-ħolma ta’ Carmel Busuttil hija l-ħolma tiegħi. Il-ħolma ta’ dawk involuti fil-football Malti li jridu jerġgħu jaraw Ta’ Qali mimli, it-tim nazzjonali jirbaħ u iktar plejers Maltin jirnexxu madwar id-dinja. Onorat ħafna li Carmel Busuttil, wieħed mill-aqwa plejers ta’ kull żmien f’pajjiżna, jemmen li bil-pjan li qed inressaq ‘il quddiem nistgħu naslu. Sodisfatt li jemmen li nistgħu niksbu ferm iktar minn kemm ksibna anke fl-aqwa żminijiet tal-footbol Malti.#ClubsFuqNett

Now Il-Bużu has said those days can return better than ever before in a video endorsement of Chris Bonett ahead of this weekend’s election of a new president for the Malta Football Association
“I’ve lived some of the best moments of my life on the football pitch,” he said. “The emotions you go through in football cannot be explained and nothing can cheer you up more than making your country win. The scenes of a packed Ta’ Qali exploding as Malta scored against the giants of Europe will remain part of our history.”
“Many talk of these days with nostalgia but I dream of the future for our children. I’m convinced we can live through better times, I believe in Chris Bonetts plan.”
Bonett, a former MFA vice-president, will go up against Bjorn Vassallo, a former MFA secretary general and current director of FIFA’s European football associations, in an election on Saturday.
