WATCH: Malta Football Legend ‘Il-Bużu’ Is Convinced The Glory Days Can Return With A Bang

It seems unbelievable now that Malta used to beat the likes of Belgium and Iceland, draw with Portugal and lose by narrow 3-2 margins to Spain and West Germany.

However, those were results obtained by the Maltese football team in the 80s and 90s, back when Carmel Busuttil (Il-Bużu), widely regarded as Malta’s best ever player, used to grace the pitch.

Now Il-Bużu has said those days can return better than ever before in a video endorsement of Chris Bonett ahead of this weekend’s election of a new president for the Malta Football Association

“I’ve lived some of the best moments of my life on the football pitch,” he said. “The emotions you go through in football cannot be explained and nothing can cheer you up more than making your country win. The scenes of a packed Ta’ Qali exploding as Malta scored against the giants of Europe will remain part of our history.”

“Many talk of these days with nostalgia but I dream of the future for our children. I’m convinced we can live through better times, I believe in Chris Bonetts plan.”

Bonett, a former MFA vice-president, will go up against Bjorn Vassallo, a former MFA secretary general and current director of FIFA’s European football associations, in an election on Saturday.
