Watch: Malta’s Rugby Sevens Teams Debut At The GSSE With Hard Hits In High Heat

Malta’s mens Rugby Sevens team lost 14-33 to Luxembourg in their second group phase game yesterday, managing to score twice against a dominant Luxembourgish side.

Though the Maltese squad put in a good performance, they were outmatched and outpaced by a persistent Luxembourgish onslaught – led by Liam Carroll who scored twice for Luxembourg.

The game was full of skilful plays and hard-but fair-hits, with the exception of a play by one of Luxembourg’s players, which earned him a yellow card.

He was kicked off the field for the last few minutes of the game – and though this led to a Maltese try, it was too late for the Maltese squad to claw its way back.

This was the both teams’ second game of the day, with Malta having beaten Andorra 19-10 and Luxembourg having tied 19-19 with Monaco.

Later in the day Malta went on to face Cyprus and pulled off an awesome 38-0 victory.

In their second of three games yesterday, the Malta women’s Rugby Sevens team faced off against the Andorran squad – struggling to get off to a strong start.

They conceded 19 points in the first half, which would ultimately lead to a losing final score of 19-15.

Still, after a disappointing first half, the second was all Malta. Maria Spiteri scored twice, and the Maltese women managed to put a total of three tries on the board – putting in some hard tackles and a few great breaks – but it wasn’t enough to push them over the top.

Earlier in the day, the Maltese women’s squad faced Montenegro and dominated from start to finish, with a final score of 31-0. Later, they faced off with Luxembourg and managed to secure a huge victory with a final score of 26-0.

This is the first time that Rugby Sevens – a higher paced, often higher scoring variant of Rugby, played with seven players and not Union’s 15 – has been played in the GSSE.

After three games played by six national Men’s teams and four national Women’s teams, the sides will face-off once again on Friday – when the Maltese men will take on the undefeated Monaco squad followed by San Marino, who are still hungry for their first win.

Today, they’ve the chance to rest-up, relax and decompress from a day of hard-hitting in high heat.
