WATCH: Malta’s Winter Olympics Delegation Waves Flag Proudly In Opening Ceremony
Malta’s delegation represented the country at the opening ceremony of the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
The island’s entry drew many eyes and smiles from the crowd, not least due to the fact that Malta’s representatives featured just one athlete.
The French-Maltese Elise Pellegrin is Malta’s only athlete at the 2018 Winter Olympics in Pyeongchang.
Clearly overjoyed to be representing her country in such a prestigious event, she walked into the athlete-filled stadium full of confidence and charisma.
Elise Pellegrin will be competing in the Alpine Skiing category of the Winter Olympics. Until recently, Malta’s participation in these events was practically unheard of.
Malta was the 24th country to enter the parade, in accordance with the Korean alphabet. Greece, as the founders of the Olympics, traditionally walk in first, with Korea, as the hosts, entering the parade last.
There were some other countries that entered the competition with just one athlete, such as South Africa, Ghana and Madagascar.
Just days ago in the Winter Olympic Village, Elise was treated to a special ceremony where the Maltese flag was raised as the Maltese national anthem was played.
