While We Were All Too Distracted With The World Cup, Malta Went And Won A European Football Championship

Billions of people are currently glued to their TV and laptop screens every couple of hours per day to watch the World Cup, and we Maltese people have yet again had to pick a team other than our own to follow. It just so happens, however, that a Maltese team was actually taking part in a football championship beyond our shores… and they only went and took first place.

The European Airports Football Championship (yes, really) is just that; a championship of 14 European teams made up of airport staff from all over the continent. Hosted by Dublin Airport, this year’s EAFC saw the Maltese delegation beat big names like Nice Airport, London City Airport, and the hosts themselves.

Malta’s football team was made up of employees from Air Malta, Aviaserve, AFM and of course Malta International Airport. The team went undefeated for eight straight matches, beating Moscow Sheremeyevo in a final clash of the three-day tournament.

“This proves that teamwork always kits out a group of people with the right gloves to punch above their weight and achieve great results together,” MLA CEO Alan Borg said of the team’s victory. “It was a pleasure to watch the team face worthy opponents with a true Maltese can-do attitude, and play their way to winning the cup.”

EAFC 2018 was held between the 15th and 17th of June, and this edition of the anticipated biyearly tournament saw the Maltese team lift the Don Treacy Cup by the end.

So the next time you find yourself sitting in your living room, sipping beer and inevitably comparing the Maltese football team’s failures with the impressive successes of other small nations like Iceland, just remember that a couple of guys in white and red still managed to bring some gold home last week.
