The 2022 World Cup is in full swing with the group stage set to conclude this week, however, one country’s absence has inevitably upset a large crowd of Maltese football.

With Italy out of the competition, before it even began, supporters might want to get behind the following teams who might give them the football joy that the Azzurri won’t be able to provide this year.

1. Spain

The Spanish team have arguably had the best first match of all 32 teams, winning their first game 7-0 to leave poor Costa Rica baffled.

Despite a relatively underwhelming draw against Germany last Sunday, Luis Enrique’s team is still a firm favourite to make it all the way to the final phases of the tournament.

2. Brazil

The red-hot favourites to win this year’s edition, Brazil have not yet lost a game or conceded a single shot on target in their group stage matches despite facing firm resistance from Serbia and Switzerland.

Although past expectations have left the South American giants disappointed, many are hoping that their strong lineup, coupled with a powerful bench, will bring it home for Brazil.

3. France

Despite facing setbacks due to injuries sustained by star players Paul Pogba, Presnel Kimpembe and Karim Benzema, the French team are displaying a unity that they have lacked in recent years.

Beating both Australia and Denmark in their first matches, Les Bleus have already secured a place in the next round.

More critical fans have been left impressed by the reigning champions’ ability to seemingly break the curse of title holders failing to come back strong the next time around.

4. Portugal

Cristiano Ronaldo has made big headlines recently and not entirely for the best of reasons, but this does not seem to have phased the Iberian heavyweights as they are also yet to lose a game.

Despite winning over Ghana by the skin of their teeth during their first match, they triumphed over Uruguay during their second game with a comfortable 2-0 scoreline.

5. Senegal

If Italy fans are reluctant to support England, then red, yellow and green may be the colours they paint on their faces as it is Senegal who will take on the three Lions in the next round.

The African team had a terrible start to the tournament after Sadio Mane’s exclusion due to injury and an unlucky first-game defeat against The Netherlands, however they have redeemed themselves unbelievably well after beating Ecuador in their last group stage game.

This means that the West African hopefuls will need to defeat England to book a place in the Quarter Finals.
