Young Maltese Athletes Shine At London Indoor Games, Setting National Records

A number of young Maltese athletes representing Rush Athletics Club delivered outstanding performances at the London Indoor Games held at Lee Valley, setting several national category records and achieving remarkable results in a highly competitive environment.

A total of 31 Maltese athletes travelled to the London capital in two delegations to take part in one of the earlier major appointments of the indoor athletics season.

The first delegation featured 16 athletes in the older youth categories, with the club athletes securing excellent results, both in terms of personal improvement but also with regards to their classification among strong competitors.

Thea Parnis Coleiro continued her impressive upward trajectory bringing home second place in the 200m, with an remarkable time of 24.91s, establishing an Under 18 and Under 20 record in the process. She also impressed in the 60m, completing the race in 7.77s, a truly incredible overall performance by the 16-year-old.

Isaac Bonnici broke two records in the U20 and U23 categories, clocking an extraordinary 1:56.55 in the 800 metres, making this an amazing feat for an 18-year-old. The athlete also showcased his versatility with a solid performance in the 400m, finishing in 51.80s.

In the hurdles, Kayleigh Anne Ellul established a new U16 and U18 record in the 60m hurdles, competing at senior height and underlining her potential as a rising star in the field. Luca Gerada also made another strong showing, completing the 60m sprint in 7.18s.

A second delegation, which included 15 younger athletes, also provided reasons to cheer for the club and the country.

Rising star Leah Frendo continued to impress with another strong performance beyond our shores coming back with no less than three indoor Under 14 category records, including a 27.83s timing on the 200m, a 4.52m jump in the long jump, and and 8.32s finish in the 60m sprint.

Among the boys, Andre Gauci made sure the Maltese flag was raised high in the British capital, winning the Under 15 shot put with a new personal best, and taking third place on the podium in the 800m.

All other young athletes achieved personal bests in their first international experience.

Both delegations in London were led by coaches and club officials Antonella Chouhal, Rachid Chouhal and Matthew Micallef.
