PL deputy leader and MEP Alex Agius Saliba has called out the EU for “total hypocrisy” over its stances on the wars in Ukraine and the Middle East.

“The EU has been completely hypocritical in the way it treated these two issues,” Agius Saliba said on Ricky Caruana’s podcast.

“I’m not justifying Russia’s invasion of Ukraine but we’re constantly being asked to vote for resolutions on Ukraine, with sanctions, threats and what not, and there is constant pressure, calls for solidarity and Ukrainian flags everywhere.”

“Around 13,000 – 15,000 civilians have been killed in Ukraine [since the war broke out in February 2022], and while every life is precious, over 42,000 civilians have been killed in the genocide in the Gaza Strip and the West Bank over the past year. They have slaughtered an entire population in a single year.”

Agius Saliba insisted that the EU must take concrete action, such as by imposing sanctions on Israeli firms that set up their operations on Palestinian land.

“Imagine someone coming to your land and taking control over it. However, the Palestinians aren’t even treated treated like second-class citizens; they’re treated like seventh-class citizens, like dogs.”

“A company can just decide to destroy a village, build a factory on people’s homes and force residents into camps, and the EU hasn’t yet found the courage to take a stance against this blatant discrimination.”

When Caruana mentioned that the USA is a strong ally of Israel, Agius Saliba admitted that “there exists fear” in EU corridors and that some well-meaning people had advised him to shut up about the Palestinian issue because powerful people could seek to politically destroy him.

However, he pledged to keep speaking out and warned that the EU’s stance is likely to get worse, with Estonian politician Kaja Kallas set to succeed Josep Borrell as the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs.

“At least Borrell tried to be a voice against the genocide; he hardly succeeded but at least he tried. However, the new High Commissioner comes from Eastern Europe and these countries are obsessed with security related to Russia because they’re scared of Russian expansion.”

“The Estonians, Latvians and Swedes are scared that Russia has an expansionist policy and that they are next, and I understand their realities.”

“However, my argument is always that the EU was set up after World WAR II as a project of peace, with countries collaborating in a single market instead of competing militarily, but this project of peace has completely ended.”
