On his latest appearance on the Fidias Podcast, leader of the Reform party and former MEP, Nigel Farage discussed Brexit and his opposition against the European Union’s methods, particularly regarding smaller nations, including Malta.

Among the discussions, Farage voiced his opinion on the dependency of small nations on the European state, stating that the necessity of “being apart of a bigger club is lazy.”

He highlighted that nations such as Cyprus and Malta could fare well on their own, particularly expressing how Malta’s integration with the EU “was a disaster.”

“I think Malta was in a very good position to be a big clean financial services centre and all of that’s lost with the EU membership,” Farage stated, “Ultimately it’s a democratic choice.”

The opinion came following a similar one related to Cyprus, where the podcast host, Fidias Panayiotou, a Cypriot himself and a member of the European Parliament, said that the country was doing well under the EU.

Farage rebutted, pointing out a lack of change within the country, further emphasising that the reason for countries’ integration with a bigger entity is “basically tribal for mankind,” citing that community is “fundamentally important to people.”

Before this, he reiterated his disapproval of the European Union, calling it “a huge historic mistake of epic proportions,” citing that its only purpose was to bring countries together in order to avoid wars, as it was initially intended to do during its formation.

“You can only merge countries if you have their consent. If you force people together without ever telling them the truth. You’re far from creating peace and harmony,” Farage continued “The way to stop war, isn’t to artificially bring people together. The way to stop war is to make sure there are full functioning democracy…and I would argue that people in Europe have not been told the truth ever.”

He concluded the segment by stating that “the European Union bullies people into joining,” while also prefacing that the only true way forward is a democratic structure.
