Jake Vella will be posthumously awarded the Ġieħ ir-Repubblika, Malta’s highest national honour.
This announcement was made by his father, Josie Vella, during the Eurosport BSJ Fleur-De-Lys Road Races in aid of YMCA Malta, held in Jake’s memory.
“We’re honoured to announce that within a few hours, Jake will be receiving Ġieħ ir-Repubblika,” Josie shared, addressing participants before the race.

He could not attend the event in person due to the ceremony preparations but left runners with heartfelt words: “I’m sure Jake will be running with you in spirit, but this time with no pain.”
The Ġieħ ir-Repubblika is awarded to individuals who have made exceptional contributions to Malta or profoundly impacted the country in a positive way.
Jake, who passed away earlier this year, captured the hearts of the Maltese public through his unwavering determination to raise awareness for ROHHAD syndrome, the rare condition he bravely battled.
Despite his challenges, Jake’s story became a beacon of hope, advocating for rare diseases and inspiring countless individuals with his courage and infectious smile.
His impact extended far beyond his personal struggles, uniting the community in acts of kindness and perseverance.
Congratulations to Jake Vella for this well-deserved recognition, which will forever enshrine his remarkable legacy in Malta’s history.
