Watch: Over 100 Turn Up For ‘Dieter’s Last Ride’ In Honour Of St Paul’s Bay Crash Victim
Up to a hundred bikers rode together in honour of their late friend, Dieter Vink, who tragically passed away on 13th December following a collision with an unpermitted skip.
The motorcade, aptly named “Dieter’s Last Ride,” kicked off from Mater Dei Mortuary yestrday morning and ended at the Xemxija Pit Stop, who many considered to be Dieter and many fellow bikers’ “second home.”
Dieter tragically succumbed to injuries sustained from a collision with a skip left on a blind bend on the St Paul’s Bay Bypass.
Following his passing and the revelation that the skip didn’t have a proper permit, Vink’s family and friends were outraged and demanded justice.
Part of their efforts included raising funds for legal fees and Dieter’s cremation through a GoFundMe page, which has garnered nearly €9,000 at the time of writing, along with donations collected during the bike ride itself.
The motorcade accumulated an amazing €1,250 from strangers, bikers, ex-colleagues alike, some of which came from abroad for the sole purpose of attending the honourable ride.
“This was a ride in his honour, it was a ride for justice,” Fleur Marie Cilia Buckett, the organiser of the bike ride and Vink’s longtime friend said,“He was one of us. It could have been any one of us.”
The route spanned across the island, passing through the site of the tragic event, where attendees bid one final salute to Dieter by revving and beeping in a touching display of camaraderie.
At the end of the motorcade, Dieter’s father, Anthony Holmes, gave a touching speech to the massive group of attendees who turned up in support of the late biker, showing his gratitude.
“I am so humbled of how many of you good people turned up,” he exclaimed, “People who knew Dieter even people who didn’t even know Dieter turned up, to make this such a special day.”
Dieter’s memory will now forever be a part of his “second home” in the form of a plaque, honouring his life.
