A man who committed bestiality and animal cruelty in Gozo has hit Italian headlines after murdering one man, and attacking another and leaving him seriously injured.

Robert Omo, 24, is being accused of murdering the 54-year-old Chinese businessman Gao Yuancheng by hammering him to death on 30th July in Monteforte Irpino, Avellino. According to Italian media, he continued to attempt to attack other people until soldiers stopped him.

He’s also accused of attacking 49-year-old Bulgarian man Krasimir Petrov. Petrov has already undergone surgery since the attack, with Italian media saying he received blows to his head.

This is not the first time Omo hit headlines over his criminal behaviour, having shocked a farmer from Xewkija, Gozo, after he found CCTV footage of the Nigerian sexually abusing and beating his mare, named Katya, in 2020.

He received a year in Maltese prison for his crimes, alongside a fine of €3,000, and was ordered to be removed from Malta once his court sentence ends.

He subsequently applied for asylum in Italy after exiting Maltese prison. His lawyer, Nicola D’Archi, said his client had originally wanted to go back to Nigeria, but his application did not succeed.

At the time of his crimes, Omo was living in a centre in Avellino run by Caritas.

However, he was running into problems at his temporary home there as well after punching a Caritas staff member who requested Omo respect the rules of the home – reportedly, the night before the murder of Yuancheng.

What can be done to avoid situations like this from arising?
