No Maltese Injured As Volcano Erupts On Stromboli Island Leaving One Man Dead
A Sicilian man has died, and many others left injured after a volcano erupted on the Italian island of Stromboli.
The man, a 35-year-old hiker, died after being hit by falling debris. Firefighters are still combating flames on the island.
Seventy people have been evacuated so far, with the navy assisting in a rescue operation.
Foreign Affairs Minister Carmelo Abela has confirmed that no Maltese were on the island.
“We saw the explosion from the hotel. There was a loud roar. We plugged our ears and after this, a cloud of ash swept over us. The whole sky is full of ash, a fairly large cloud,” a woman who works on the island told the BBC.
Stromboli, which is located off the north coast of Malta’s neighbour Sicily, and has a population of around 500 people. It plays host to one of the most active volcanos on Earth, with eruptions occurring regularly since 1932.
