Prime Minister Robert Abela announced that courts will no longer be able to impose suspended sentences to people who kill others while caught driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.

Instead, they will be forced to impose effective prison sentences if they are found guilty.

“As of today, drivers who irresponsibly put themselves and others in danger must think twice,” Abela said.

“We will strengthen the deterrent for those who cause death while driving under the influence of alcohol or drugs.”

“Under what we are proposing, the courts will no longer have the option of giving a suspended sentence, but will impose an actual prison term.”

“Enforcement is already being stepped up, and we are determined to continue investing in safety through an inter-ministerial effort between Ministers Byron Camilleri and Chris Bonett and the dedicated officials in their respective responsible entities.”
