No One Will Turn Our Streets Into A Jungle, Robert Abela Pledges After Ħamrun Street Fight

After a very public street fight erupted in the centre of Ħamrun, Prime Minister Robert Abela insisted that no one will be allowed to turn the streets of Malta into a “jungle”.
“What happened in Ħamrun is unacceptable and disgusting, irrespective of whether the perpetrators were foreigners or Maltese nationals,” Abela said on ONE Radio this morning.
“We cannot tolerate this behaviour in our society.”

Police believe that the fight, which took place on Thursday and involved around 25 men, was started by a group of Syrians. Abela said he is informed the police plan to press charges against people in relation to the fight and urged the courts to send a “clear message”.
Later on in his intervention, the Prime Minister said that such “messages” from the courts should include decisions on convictions and bail requests and words of encouragements to the police.
“I want to send a message to those who think that they’re above the law… no one will be allowed to turn our streets into a jungle,” Abela said. “Every citizen has a right to live in peace, both at home and on the streets. This is a crystal clear principle for government and its entities.”
The Prime Minister also spoke of the importance of police body cams as a means of capturing clear evidence of street fights, as well as community policing schemes as a means of building trust between communities and police officers.
What can be done to prevent these incidents from occurring?
