‘Not A Single Complaint Of Bullying From Refugees’: Malta’s Education Commissioner Starts Initiative Amid Glaring Discrepancy

Malta’s Education Commissioner will be launching his own private initiative into the issues facing refugee children in the country’s schools after he failed to receive a single complaint of bullying last year.

“I did not receive a single complaint of bullying from children and families who are refugees. This is impossible.  These are the poorest of the poor, the most vulnerable among us, and yet we do not know enough of what is happening in schools,” he said.

The initiative will see either Commissioner Charles Caruana Carabez visit every school in the country, or create a delegation where he could establish a direct line for refugee families.

“We are only two of us in this office so it may take some time,” Caruana Carabez lamented.

On the zero number of cases he received, Caruana Carabez believes it is a clear indication that refugees don’t have the tools file a complaint or the necessary knowledge that an Ombudsman’s office is available to air and seek solutions to their issues.

The issues facing foreigners at schools appears to be a key subject for Caruana Carabez, who has warned in the past of growing cultural issues within Malta’s educational system.
