Object To ‘Monstrous Comino Village’, Environmental NGOs Urge Public

A group of NGOs has urged the public to object to “monstrous” plans to create a complex of villas as part of development plans on Comino.

The plans, which are currently being considered by the Planning Authority, involve the redevelopment of the former Comino Hotel, by replacing nine derelict bungalows currently at Santa Marija Bay with a much larger complex of 19 villas complete with a convenience store and amenities.

The NGOs warn that it could turn into a “Comino village” of permanent residences through the use of legal loopholes.

“It is shocking that such a development is even being considered,” the environmental NGOs said in a joint statement.

The group, which includes BirdLife Malta, Din l-Art Ħelwa, Flimkien għal Ambjent Aħjar, Friends of the Earth Malta, Moviment Graffitti, Nature Trust Malta – FEE, and Ramblers’ Association of Malta, warned about the massive environmental impact, irreversible destruction of areas of natural habitat for the complex itself and the greater area of disturbance around it.

“The public should take the opportunity to express their frustration at this proposed development, and remind the Planning Authority that their duty does not lie with developers and big business, but towards the greater good “on behalf of the community to provide a balanced and sustainable environment”, as per their mission statement,” they said in a joint press statement, urging the public to sign their appeal.

The proposed plans for the new Comino Hotel by Hili Group have been approved by the Environment and Resources Authority (ERA). It is now being appealed to the Planning Tribunal (EPRT) by several organisations.
