Watch: Officials Suspend Match As Maccabi Haifa Fans Throw Flares Into Ħamrun Spartans Crowd

A Champion’s League match in Ta’ Qali’s Centenary Stadium was suspended after clashes between Maccabi Haifa and Ħamrun Spartans fans got out of hand.

During the match, Maccabi fans began lighting flares as the atmosphere became heated.

The match was stopped in the first half by referee Donald Robertson after Maccabi fans threw a number of flares towards Ħamrun Spartans fans, causing a scene.

The match continued. However, within ten minutes of the second half, when the Maccabi side was leading 2-0, more flares were thrown towards Spartans fans, leading the Maltese contingent to throw water bottles back in retaliation.

Police officers attempted to get between the two sides and calm things down however footage from the match shows how tense the situation had become.

The match was suspended shortly afterwards with players asked to leave the pitch. 

Around ten minutes later, officials allowed the match to resume, warning fans that another incident would cause the game to be called off.

Maccabi Haifa went on to win the match 4-0.
