‘One Huge Mess’: Sliema Residents Take To The Streets Over Ongoing Waste Crisis
A massive crowd of residents gathered in Sliema last night to protest against the government’s inaction over the ongoing waste crisis.
This comes as rats and smelly rubbish have been seen infesting Malta’s touristic places, with Sliema and St Julian’s being among the worst hit towns on the islands.
Residents say the current situation has reached a breaking point, with overflowing garbage bins and litter plaguing every corner of the area.
“Look around; all you see is filth. And that’s not even getting into the overdevelopment and the skyrocketing population,” said one frustrated resident during the protest, which took place in the Fond Għadir area.
Present at the protest were also members from the Sliema Local Council and Sliema Mayor John Pillow, who has been making the residents’ voices heard in a series of videos and interventions.
Speakers addressing the crowd insisted that the time has come to say “enough is enough.” They argue that Sliema is being completely ignored by the authorities, who seem to be turning a blind eye to the degrading quality of life in one of Malta’s most popular regions.
The organisers of the event demanded immediate changes to the waste collection schedule, including more frequent garbage collection.
