Malta has come out on top for being the least on time for flights in comparison to our fellow EU counterparts.

The Maltese islands officially have the worst delays for inbound flights this year.

According to Eurocontrol, an international air traffic agency, Malta ranked first for inbound delays and second to worst for outbound. In fact, just over half (57%) of flights into Malta arrived on time, i.e. within 15 minutes of their scheduled time.

Finland and Estonia ranked the best for flight punctuality.

Summer in Europe has been tough for airlines due to a surge in flights amid a loss of air space due to the ongoing war in Ukraine.

Malta’s national airline has been plagued with delays in the year. Earlier this month, 150 passengers were stranded in Lourdes, while some were simply compensated with €6 vouchers for overnight delays.

Reasons for delays are never cut and dry, but Malta Air CEO David O’Brien did allude to “misbehaviour” by Malta’s air traffic control was leading to inefficiency.
