One of Malta’s busiest roads is finally getting a much needed €1.6 million upgrade in a bid to improve safety in the area.

Infrastructure Malta is currently building a new roundabout at the crossroads between Sant’ Andrija Road and several streets in Pembroke and the HighRidge area of Swieqi.

During the last few decades, this crossroads has seen many collisions, some with serious consequences. The expectations for this new project is that it will help improve safety in the area, especially for residents and nearby schools.

In addition to a roundabout, the area will also be getting three bus stops with new lay-bys, new pedestrian crossing across Sant’ Andrija Road and new footpaths to nearby schools and residential areas.

“This is a € 1.6 million project and includes walking paths as well as better access to sports facilities and residential areas. It will also have better public transport facilities,” Minister for Transport Ian Borg said on a Facebook post.

Construction is expected to commence within the next few days and will be completed in approximately six months.

“During the first phases of the project, Sir Adrian Dingli Street will be open in one way only, in the southbound direction. The existing access to this road from Sant’ Andrija Road will be closed and diverted through Martin Luther King Road, further north. The Sant’ Andrija exits to Suffolk Street and the High Ridge and the San Patrizju residential areas will remain open during the initial works.”
