Only 28 Traffic Fines Issued On New Year’s Eve As Many Maltese Revellers Leave Car At Home

Only 28 people were found breaking traffic laws on the night between New Year’s Eve and New Year’s Day, police have revealed.
A police spokesperson confirmed this data to Lovin Malta following an intensive night of law enforcement which saw 890 vehicles stopped by police officers and soldiers.
“These inspections were carried out as part of our road safety campaign which led to no major accidents reported throughout the night, and this thanks to the general public for their cooperation,” the police said.
Although they didn’t provide a full breakdown of the traffic regulations broken, they had stated earlier that they had found people driving without a valid license, driving without a seatbelt on and driving under the influence of alcohol.
The low figure of law-breakers continues a downward trend witnessed in recent years; 69 people were found in breach of traffic laws on New Year’s Eve in 2019/20 and 52 were found in 2020/21.
Many revellers were aware that they shouldn’t drive after a night out drinking and indeed there wasn’t a single major accident on the roads, but this phenomenon resulted in a huge spike in cab and taxi fares.
