Ooh La La: 7 French Eateries For That Unforgettable Date

There is a reason why chefs worldwide are first taught the principles of French Cuisine when they start culinary school.

The rich gastronomic history, diversity of regional foods, and academic documentation of the various cooking methods have turned it into a universal language for chefs worldwide on which to base their own official regional cooking.

Rich complex sauces combine with simple peasant cuisine to provide a beautiful way to serve any kind of food imaginable. Not to mention their delectable pastries!

We have tried to catch some examples of French cuisine in Malta. Some tend to be on the fancy side for that important date or special occasion.

1. Gracy’s Art & Supper Club, Valletta

Gracy’s, a 17th-century palazzo turned glam supper club, with a sky-high terrace bar, a karaoke bar in the 450-year-old vaults, and a stunning restaurant headed up by Tom Peters.

I felt that you could could not give an honest representation of French food without highlighting the classy fine dining side of it. So I’ll give you a bit of Gracy.

2. Manouche, Spinola, Valletta, Bay Street, Sliema and now in Mosta

A modern recreation of the traditional French bakeries and bistros, the Manouche needs no introduction. With a dazzling variety of pastries and great coffee, they also offer great breakfasts, brunches, and bistro food.

3. The Sixth Leaf Restaurant, Naxxar

This welcoming restaurant on It-Telgħa T-Alla u Ommu offers a fusion of fine French and Middle Eastern food. They have highly creative vegetarian and vegan options besides sustainably bred meat and wild fish. A delight to the senses.

4. Palazzo Parisio, Naxxar

Bottomless brunches, luxurious lunches, and occasional occasions where you want to feel the refinements of nobility reside in this opulent 18th-century palazzo.

You can expect modern takes on Maltese classics like “Caramelised octopus, smoked carrot puree, balsamic glaze, wakame, and ginger foam” as well as extravagant dishes like “Orange & Grand Marnier Aquarello Risotto with Marinated Duck Breast”.

5. Grotto Tavern, Rabat

Fine dining in a quirky venue, the Grotto Tavern rules the catacomb underworld of Rabat from this refined cave with food to die for and creative cocktails. Spectacular renditions of classic favourites are designed to impress any date however blasé.

6. Fernandõ Gastrotheque, Sliema

Now to introduce some Michelin-starred goodness, this is a place where you can take a real food and wine aficionado and will know that you won’t be let down.
