Opposition Leader Proposes Planting Three Trees For Every Person In Malta

Opposition leader Adrian Delia has proposed a massive tree planting programme in Malta that will see three trees planted for every person on the island.
“When we look around us, we should be able to see open spaces and greenery and not concrete and cement jungles. After all, trees are our lungs and our children’s lungs,” Delia said when asked what his vision for Malta was during an interview on Xtra Sajf tonight.
“In the [MEP election campaign], I had cited Greta Thunberg who said climate change has led the planet to a moment of tilt and that the planet is approaching a point of no return.”
“Let’s become the country which shows the world that the environment is an utmost priority. After all, what does the entire wealth of the world even mean if you can’t breathe clean air?”
Delia cited how Ethiopia recently planted 350 million trees in 12 hours, breaking a record set in 2017 by India, when volunteers planted nearly 50 million trees in a day.
The Opposition leader, who confirmed he is planning a shadow cabinet reshuffle, was coy on whether PN MP Jason Azzopardi, who has been an outspoken critic of Delia, will remain the party’s shadow environment minister.
“I will make the necessary changes in the shadow portfolios. I will create teams of people, some of whom will be outside the parliamentary group. On the environment, people with the greatest credibility on the subject will be chosen,” he said.
