Over 1 Million Litres Of Water Used To Disinfect Over 19,000 Kilometers Of Pavement In Malta

Over one million litres of water has been used to disinfect over 19,000km of Maltese pavement, with a team of 100 workers disinfecting various localities around the clock for the last six weeks.
Head of the Maintenance and Cleansing Division Ramon Deguara said workers have been dressed head to toe in full protective clothing, and oftentimes work throughout the night to disinfect some of the busier areas on the island.
“The first places we focused on were the bus shelters and benches, then the pavements, railings, subways, and bus terminuses in Valletta and Buġibba,” Deguara told TVM.
“We then concentrated on the piazzas of localities like Raħal Ġdid and Valletta where there are lots of shops. Today we extended the service everywhere, even into residential zones.”

Some popular places, like the bus terminus at Bieb il-Bombi in Floriana, are being disinfected three times a week.
“Our workers have been trained by the Civil Protection Department to dispose of their clothes and I can tell you that their clothes are thrown away daily – every day they are given new clothes,” Deguara said. “The mask is a personal item and stays with the workers as they just need to change the filters and it’ll continue working.”
The cleansing department’s normal work, including the cleaning of bays and certain streets, has continued in tandem with this new disinfection work rolled out in light of the COVID-19 pandemic.
