Since June, no less than 227 cases have been reported to a national domestic violence agency established to monitor and assess information to mitigate the risk for domestic violence victims and enhance public safety.

The ongoing campaign against domestic violence, themed ‘Beat the Silence,’ released these statistics.

Of the 219 cases referred to MARAM (Multi-Agency Risk Assessment Meeting), 18 were men and 207 were women, primarily involving violence within relationships, TVM reported.

Additionally, there were 29 cases of violence by children against parents, and ten cases involved individuals previously victimised.

Minister Michael Falzon condemned domestic violence, emphasising victims often blame themselves.

A report from the Foundation for Social Welfare Services revealed that in the first six months of the year, 7,813 individuals called Supportline 179, with 267 reporting domestic violence, predominantly psychological and physical.

On her part, Parliamentary Secretary Rebecca Buttigieg emphasised the unacceptability of narratives normalising domestic violence.
