Over 424 Abortion Pills Ordered In Malta In 2022, Marking New Record
Over 424 abortion pills were ordered by people in Malta in 2022, marking a new record number.
The figure was released exclusively by Doctors for Choice Malta, showing a strong increase in women ordering abortion pills in the country throughout the last four years.
“The sustained increase in abortion pill packs sent to Malta in 2022 indicates that the growth in popularity of online telemedicine services is a permanent one, and not simply a temporary trend during the pandemic,” Doctors for Choice said on social media.
“More people in Malta are choosing to order abortion pills online and use them in the privacy of their homes because this is less disruptive and less costly than having to travel to a clinic abroad.”
“The shift of abortion care to telemedicine is not a phenomenon that is happening only in Malta. In fact, the World Health Organisation now recommends the option of telemedicine as an alternative to in-person interactions with the health worker to deliver medical abortion services in whole or in part,” it continued.
In 2017 and 2018, the number of abortion pills ordered was 93 and 92 respectively. In 2019, however, this jumped to 128.
In 2020, 289 abortion pills were brought into the country, doubling since the year 2019. And in 2021, 356 pills were ordered.
As it stands, abortion pills, which are used in the first few weeks of an unwanted pregnancy, are illegal in Malta.
