Malta International Airport hit its 2022 target of serving 5.5 million passengers by November.

MIA is back and thriving after the pandemic had set things back a bit.

”The summer was one of recovery, we did well. Then in the winter we continued to see that the routes and connections started to establish themselves again,” airport staff member Michela Catania told TVM in a new interview.

Last August saw 700,000 passengers pass through departures – a record-breaking ever since 2019.

”In November we recorded the highest recovery rate in a month since 2019. That is, we had a recovery rate in passenger traffic of 88%,” Catania said.

Surprisingly, 23rd December was the busiest day of the whole year – with 17,000 travellers passing through.

And MIA staff are already excited from the early indications for 2023.

”Next year we are seeing that it will be a better year than this year. However, we do not feel that we will reach the figures of 2019, but we are still aiming to reach them in the year 2024,” said Catania.
