The beautiful sum of €13,076 has been raised for Len and Jacob’s Wellness Fund, through the swim-run challenge which was organised from Ċirkewwa to Valletta earlier this month.
The event, which happened on 3rd June, was a major success, with the athletes involved pushing through the heat, waves, and jellyfish.
“We keep highlighting that when we come together we can achieve great results… Donations were collected also from the UK, USA, and Australia… So we wish to thank anyone locally and internationally,” Brian Galea, their father, told Lovin Malta.
“Our swimmers and runners overcame so many issues on the day. We learned some important lessons at the event, which will help us improve the running of future challenges,” they said on Facebook.
Len and Jacob are 10-year-old twins who suffer from a very rare disease called Infantile Refsum disease (IRD) which falls within the Zellweger spectrum of peroxisome biogenesis disorders (PBDs).
These are a series of genetic inherited disorders that damage the white matter of the brain and affect motor movements, causing speech impairment and other difficulties, including mental ones.
In order to raise funds, their parents launched the Len and Jacob Wellness Fund, and two high-endurance charity events were organised in 2021 (Mosta Basilica to Ta’Pinu Basilica) and in 2022 (M’Xlokk Shrine to Ta’Pinu Shrine).
Funds collected will be supporting the boy’s therapies, living, and research expenses.
