Owen Bonnici On Second Visit To Ukraine For Cultural Conference On Cooperation For Resilience
Culture Minister Owen Bonnici visited Ukraine for the second time since the outbreak of the war to address the Cultural Conference: Cooperation for Resilience.
The conference agenda focused on the theme “Culture as a Component of National Security: Joint Steps for the Protection and Conservation of Cultural Heritage in Ukraine”, bringing together Ministers of Culture and the Arts from various European countries.
While addressing the conference, Bonnici emphasised the crucial role of culture in building resilience, promoting regional development, and fostering social cohesion—not only in Ukraine but across all of Europe.
“The resilience of the courageous Ukrainian people and the strength of the country’s cultural identity are fundamental pillars for both national and regional stability. Since the war broke out in 2022, the strong-willed people of Ukraine have stood firm, stronger than ever before, to defend their loved ones, their country, and their cultural identity,” Bonnici said.
He explained that despite ongoing challenges, culture remains a powerful force that unites people, reinforces community values, and empowers individuals to maintain a sense of identity and belonging.
Bonnici further highlighted that Ukraine’s cultural identity currently faces multiple threats, including the physical destruction of cultural monuments, the suppression of traditions, and other forms of cultural attacks—a challenge that demands our collective attention.
He stressed that this is not just an issue for Ukraine but for the entire democratic global community, which stands for freedom and fundamental rights.
In his speech, Bonnici reaffirmed Malta’s commitment to strengthening partnerships that prioritize culture, emphasizing that through these efforts, not only does Malta support Ukraine, but it also contributes to a stronger and more united Europe.
